Treating Children With Medical Cannabis

Children like Charlotte Figi and Novaleigh Barker (affectionately known as Supernova) have changed the way the world views cannabis, and in particular, the use of cannabis oil for children.  Many such stories exist throughout the world, and while legal cannabis oil is still unavailable to many, parents have gone to great lengths to ensure that their children are given that second chance.  In some instances, cannabis has saved lives and in others, it has given a quality of life that would otherwise not have existed.  The story of Lily Rowland was featured in National Geographic and the story of Jonathan Jr is as moving as the rest of the success stories. Parents like the Figis and Sarah Wilkinson, have gone to great lengths to ensure that their children are stocked with the correct cannabis oil – something that has been life changing for them and their children.

Many conditions in infants and young children, can be managed with full spectrum CBD oil, but it is important to note that children like Novaleigh, make use of a 10:1 strain THC oil.  To effectively treat children with medical cannabis, we have compiled the following guideline:

This Treatment Guideline is to be used for cannabis oils that are endorsed by CannaMedica and is to be used as a guideline for treating children with ailments, including:

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) Cerebral Palsy (CP)
Seizures Intellectual Disability (ID)
Motor Disorders Tourette’s Syndrome
Traumatic Brain Injury (TMI) Communication, Language & Speech Disorders
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Developmental Co-ordination Disorder
Epilepsy Asthma

Our clients are people who have consistently chosen cannabis oil that has been endorsed by Medical Cannabis Dispensary over conventional medicines that have let them down.  Nobody likes to get high, least of all when you are treating young children – if our oils are used correctly, this can be avoided completely.  Should you not feel comfortable or have any questions at any time, our trained staff are on standby to answer your concerns or questions.

Cannabis oils are best kept in a cool, dark environment.  Oils have a shelf-life of many years, but to avoid degradation, please keep away from direct light and heat.

For dosing when using a tincture, do not dilute in water or juice. All our oils are supplied in a dropper-top bottle for ease of dispensing.  Do not squeeze hard on the dropper bulb, but allow for gravitational dispensing of drops, while applying light pressure to the dropper bulb.  It is best dispensed directly into the mouth, but should you feel unsure, the drops can be dispensed onto a teaspoon to ensure accurate dosing.  CBD has a bitter taste and some people may find this unpleasant.  Should you feel uncomfortable with the taste, a small bit of honey on the teaspoon can assist.

CBD tincture for children
CannaMedica Endorses Icharos CBD oil – 20:1

CBD refers to cannabis oil with a high content ratio of CBD, which promotes general good health and wellbeing.  Cannabis oils with a high content of CBD are made from CBD-rich strains of cannabis and are not to be confused with hemp CBD, which has little to no therapeutic qualities and is a nutritional supplement.  CBD oil made from the cannabis plant contains a modicum of THC to render it effective.  In order for CBD to be at its most efficacious, it needs to work in synergy with THC, a phenomenon known as “The Entourage Effect”.   CBD is not psychoactive and is a natural and powerful anti-inflammatory agent which effectively treats the pain associated with inflammation.

CBD Cannabis Oils endorsed by Medical Cannabis Dispensary are CHILD-FRIENDLY.

In addition to the myriad of therapeutic and medicinal qualities that you can expect from CBD oil, taken on its own, can effectively treat the following conditions:

·         General Health & Wellbeing ·         Depression ·         Anxiety
·         Stress ·         Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) ·         Diabetes
·         Cancer Prevention ·         Cancer Remission ·         Heart Disease

CannaMedica endorses CBD oil produced from a CBD-rich strain with a 20:1 ratio CBD to THC.

The recommended dosage for children is calculated according to body weight.  The recommendation is to dose 1 drop (2mg) of CBD for every kilogram (kg) of body weight.  This dosage needs to be divided into portions throughout the day, preferably three times.  If you are unable to dose 3 times per day, twice will suffice.

Example: A child weighing 10kg would take approximately 10 drops throughout the day – 3-4 drops 3 times per day.

THC tincture for children
CannaMedica endorses Icharos Delta 9 tinctures – 15:1

THC is the active ingredient in cannabis that causes the euphoric state that is commonly known as a “high”.  However, when micro-dosing with a tincture, this can be avoided, allowing your body to build up a tolerance over a short period of time.  There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to dosing with THC – it is different for everyone.  Most people need to get on with their daily lives and cannot afford to be high.  With children, we also want to avoid this completely.  CannaMedica endorses a cannabis strain of 15:1 – THC/CBD.

The recommendation is to start on the lowest dosage, which is 1 drop (2mg), and increase the dosage by 1 drop at a time until you have found the desired dosage.  Remember that you need to feel comfortable – if you feel “high” or abnormal, decrease your dosage and remain on the lower dosage for 72 hours before increasing again.  Dosing twice per day is normally sufficient – early morning and later afternoon.  If you are having trouble sleeping and you are not using CBN as a sleep aid, a third dosage before bed is advisable.

Please note that for all the conditions listed above, CBD oil is usually sufficient and THC should only be added to complement if necessary.  Speak to our trained staff to find out which oils are best suited for your needs.

Using our tincture, we recommend starting with a dosage of:

  • CBD: 1 drop of CBD for every kilogram of body weight, divided into dosages throughout the day;
  • THC: 1 drop 2-3 times per day. Starting on 1 drop will allow your body to build a resistance, and this can be increased by 2 drops per dosage every 48-72 hours if needed.

All tinctures contain 1000mg extract and are suspended in 10ml MCT oil as a carrier liquid.  Each bottle contains 500+ drops and is supplied in a dropper-top bottle.  Each drop of tincture is equal to 2mg of cannabis extract.

CannaMedica is unable to comment on other cannabis oils, whose origins are unknown to us.  We recommend reading about Cannabis Oil in South Africa, before making any decisions.

All cannabis oils endorsed by MCDSA are made from medical grade, organic cannabis flowers only.  The oils are processed in laboratory conditions using the latest technology.  Supercritical CO² extraction is the cleanest and least invasive extraction technique and is completely solvent-free.  The entire process, from soil to oil, is controlled – after all, what you put in is what you get out.  Our oils are not lab tested at local laboratories.

Every person’s tolerance levels vary.  Rather be safe and start with low dosages and increase until the desired effect is reached.  This way one avoids getting high altogether.  If too much THC or CBN is consumed too quickly, a “high” or “stoned” feeling can be experienced.  A general change in perception, euphoria (heightened mood) and an increase in appetite.  Short-term effects include a decrease in short-term memory, dry mouth, impaired motor skills, red eyes and feelings of paranoia and/or anxiety.  In the event of experiencing a “high”, it is best to lie down, take a nap and sleep it off.  The feeling will pass!
